This document describes the installation and use of the corporate drivers for the HP Officejet 7100 Series software. These drivers are targeted to users in a corporate environment and provide a customized software solution that supports Officejet 7100 Series All-in-One devices on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP platforms.
The HP Officejet 7100 All-in-One unit is a standalone flat-bed color copier which includes an automatic document feeder (ADF), providing multi-sheet feed capabilities found in scroll-fed devices. The HP Officejet 7100 All-in-One offers front-panel copy and fax functions. Front-panel copy options include multiple copies, enlarge/reduce, lighter/darker, and copy quality; front-panel fax options include basic and advanced fax settings such as speed dial, receive mode, and redial/pause, allowing the user to send and receive black-and-white and color faxes without the need for a PC connection or software installation. Scan functionality is provided through the Scan Toolbox software (the default scan resolution is set to 200 dpi, 24-bit color, but can be changed through the Scan Toolbox.)
The HP Officejet 7100 Series corporate drivers are designed for a commercial environment, where a smaller driver footprint and the elimination of background software processes are desirable. The key advantages of the corporate software solution are listed below:
The corporate drivers should not be installed on a system that is running the full, retail solution. Instead, they should be used in place of the full solution to achieve the results listed above.
Note: Many features in the full retail solution are disabled while using the corporate solution.
Unavailable in the corporate solution:
There are three functional parts of the enterprise solution: the TWAIN Data Source manager, the Print Driver, and the Silent Installer.
Any of the following three connection types can be used to connect the Officejet 7100 Series product to the PC with the corporate drivers:
The HP Officejet 7100 corporate drivers are Microsoft WHQL compliant on both the Windows 2000 and Windows XP platforms. The corporate solution supports HP JetDirect 175x Network Web Scan and Print Server printing.
Note: Because Windows NT 4.0 does not support USB, you must use the optional Centronics LIO (sold separately) to facilitate a direct connection between a PC running Windows NT 4.0 and the HP Officejet. The Centronics (Parallel) LIO must be installed and operational during the software installation.
You do not need to shut down the PC before connecting the parallel cable. However, it is recommended that you restart the PC after connecting the parallel cable. For parallel cable connections on Windows NT, no plug-and-play event will occur.
Remember, the parallel cable is only required for direct connections. It is not required for network connections.
The user installing the software MUST have administrative privileges during setup. This is a Microsoft Corporation requirement. If the software is installed via a software distribution process such as MSI or SMS, administrative privileges must be in effect during the installation portion where the software is installed onto the PC. Administrative rights must also be in effect when the device is physically connected to the PC using the USB or 1284 Parallel cable.
The PC must be in ECP mode. This is the default setting in newer model PCs, and can be verified or changed using the PC’s BIOS setup page available when starting up the computer. Ask your System Administrator for more information on how to enable and verify ECP.
The HP Officejet 7100 Series Director software (the full retail solution that ships with the product) must be uninstalled. The Director software is on a CD that ships in the product box.
To use two HP Officejet 7100 Series devices, one with the Director software and one with the corporate drivers, uninstall the Director software, install the corporate drivers, and then reinstall the Director software.
The corporate drivers can support more than one device connection, but not concurrently. For instance, a user with a laptop computer may have one HP Officejet 7100 Series at home and another HP Officejet 7100 Series at work. The software will install a separate instance for each device. However, printing and scanning to more than one device at the same time is not supported.
For Windows 2000 and Windows XP users, there are two processes required to complete the installation of the corporate solution. The first process, installing the software, must be completed entirely before proceeding with the second process, connecting the Officejet to the PC.
Note: Administrative privileges must be in effect during the software installation portion, as well as when the device is physically connected to the PC using the USB or 1284 Parallel cable.
For Windows NT, the parallel cable or network connection must be in place before you begin to install the software. If it is not, you will be unable to print to or scan from the Officejet.
You can use either of the following methods to install the software for the HP Officejet 7100 Series corporate solution.
Option 1: Run setup.exe from the CD to install the software to the default location. (c:\Program Files\HP TWAIN Data Source)
Option 2: Run setup.exe from Microsoft's Systems Management Server (SMS). Use the following command line switches to customize the installation:
| -s |
takes input from an ISS response file. This option can be used in conjunction with the -SMS (case-sensitive) switch. |
|
| -SMS |
provides feedback to the SMS Server. This switch is case-sensitive. |
|
-p |
causes the splash screen to appear during installation. |
|
| -r |
causes setup.exe to automatically generate a silent setup file (.iss file). This file provides a record of the setup input in the Windows folder. |
|
-f1 |
specifies an alternate location and name of the response file (.iss file). If this option is used when running Install Shield, the response file is read from the folder/file specified by <path\ResponseFile>. Example: Setup -f1 c:\scripts\setupoj.iss In this example, the installer would extract the parameters to use during setup from the file named setupoj.iss located on the C drive in the scripts directory. (The person responsible for the installer would place the appropriate answers in this file.) Note: The response file can be saved anywhere on the PC, as long as the correct path is specified with the -f1 parameter. If this option is used along with the -r option, the response file is written to the folder and file specified by <path\ResponseFile>. If an alternate compiled script is specified using the -f switch, the -f1 switch entry must follow the -f switch entry. |
For further information on Microsoft's SMS Server, refer to Microsoft's documentation on System Management Server.
Step 2. Connect the Officejet to the PC
Once the HP Officejet 7100 Corporate software solution is fully installed (the progress bar in the dialog box reaches the end and displays “Installation Complete”), connect the Officejet to the PC using a USB cable (not supplied). When the drivers are loaded successfully, a message appears in the lower-right hand corner of the screen saying that the installation was successful and the device is ready to use. It is not necessary to reboot the PC after installation.
For Windows NT users, the parallel cable or network connection MUST be in place before the installation process begins. Before continuing to the next step, verify that the connection is in place and the Officejet unit has been powered on.
Note: If you do not connect the Officejet to the computer before installing the software, the installation will appear to be successful. However, you will be unable to print to or scan from the Officejet.
Once you have verified that the connection between the Officejet and PC is in place and the Officejet is turned on, use either of the two installation methods described in step 1 in the Windows 2000 and XP section to install the software on Windows NT.
When performing a TWAIN scan from within a TWAIN-compliant application such as Microsoft Office or Adobe Photoshop (or a WIA scan from Windows XP applications), the default scanning configuration for the HP Officejet 7100 device is 200 dpi, 24-bit color. You can change this default scanning configuration using the Scan Toolbox included in the HP Officejet 7100 corporate driver software.
To launch the Scan Toolbox:
From the Windows Start menu, select Programs, hp officejet 7100 series corporate driver, HP Officejet 7100 series TWAIN Scan ToolBox.
Note: The Scan Toolbox is a configuration settings dialog box only. It will not launch a separate scanning program.
There are five scanning configurations available in the Scan Toolbox:
Choosing one of these settings changes the default scanning configuration for all subsequent TWAIN and WIA scans. For example, if you choose Photo, all subsequent TWAIN and WIA scans (such as those you perform within Microsoft Word) are optimized for photos.
Choosing Custom allows you to customize your future scans by modifying the Resolution, Brightness, and Contrast settings.
Note: Increasing the resolution may result in a very large file size without a noticeable improvement in quality for most PC applications.
Note: When you execute a scan from a TWAIN-compliant application, if you click Insert, the application will use the scan parameters specified in the TWAIN dialog box instead of the HP Scan Toolbox. If you want to use the Scan Toolbox settings to scan from a TWAIN-compliant application, click Custom Insert instead of Insert.
The corporate driver for the HP Officejet 7100 Series supports TWAIN scanning and Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) scanning.
Note: WIA scanning is only available on Windows XP.
Note: TWAIN scanning is not supported when scanning over the network.
After the software and the hardware have been installed successfully on the PC, you can use any TWAIN-compliant application to scan. The examples below offer instructions on how to scan from the HP Officejet using a TWAIN-compliant application.
Before you begin, make sure that the Scanner and Camera add-ins for Microsoft Word (Microsoft Photo Editor for Office 97 users) are installed on your system. If they are not installed, contact your System Administrator for information on how to install these options from the Microsoft Office CD, or check Microsoft Corporation’s knowledgebase at:
Place the picture or document to be scanned in the Officejet's automatic document feeder (ADF) or on the glass.
Pull down the Insert menu and select Picture, From Scanner or Camera.
Note: Clicking Insert will use the Microsoft Office standard scanning parameters for Resolution, Brightness, and Contrast. Clicking Custom Insert will display a dialog box you can use to set these parameters to your specifications.
Note: When scanning with Office XP on a PC running Windows XP, if you click Insert, as described above, Office XP automatically crops the top, bottom, and side margins, up to 1½ inches. This occurs on scans you make from the glass or from the ADF. Click Custom Insert instead of Insert to scan without cropping in Office XP.
Place the picture or document you want to scan in the Officejet's automatic document feeder (ADF) or on the glass.
Select Get and Fix Photo, Get Photo.
Click Scanners, and then select hp officejet 7100 TWAIN.
Click Mode, and then choose either Guided or Custom.
Click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click Done.
From the Windows Start menu, choose All Programs, Accessories, and then select Scanner and Camera Wizard. The Scanner and Camera Wizard will identify the HP Officejet 7100 Series device.
Click Next and follow the prompts to complete the scan.
The HP Officejet 7100 Series offers an optimized printing mode: 4800 Optimized dpi printing. Use 4800 Optimized dpi printing when the highest possible print quality for photos is needed.
From
your software application's File menu, choose Print.
The Print dialog box appears. Make sure the HP Officejet 7100 Series is
selected as the device you are printing to.
Click Properties or Preferences, depending on the software application you are using.
In
the Paper Type list, select one of the premium photo papers.
Your HP Officejet 7100 automatically sets the Print Quality to Best.
Note: In order to use 4800 Optimized
dpi printing, you must specify a premium photo paper as the Paper Type.
If you do not, this option is unavailable in the dialog box.
In the Paper Size list, select the appropriate paper size.
Select 4800 x 1200 Optimized dpi.
Click OK to close the dialog box.
Click OK to print.
Note: In 4800 Optimized dpi mode, your HP Officejet 7100 Series prints significantly slower than normal and temporarily uses a large amount of disk space, but generates the highest quality output. This printing mode offers advantages to photo printing only.
Network printing and basic image scanning are available using an HP JetDirect 175x print server, HP JetDirect software, and the HP Officejet 7100 Series corporate print driver.
Scanning over the network is supported via Web Scan. Web Scan is a browser-based scanning user interface in the JetDirect print server. To use Web Scan, enter the IP address of the JetDirect 175x in the address bar of Microsoft's Internet Explorer (version 4.0 or later) or any other Java-enabled browser. See the HP JetDirect 175x User Guide for more information on using Web Scan.
Note: TWAIN scanning is not supported when scanning over the network.
For Windows 2000 and Windows XP users, the HP JetDirect software can be installed before or after installing the corporate drivers. For Windows NT users, the JetDirect software must be installed at the same time as the printer driver.
The HP JetDirect software can be installed before or after installing the corporate drivers.

The HP JetDirect software comes with the HP JetDirect 175x print server.
There are two ways to obtain the latest HP JetDirect software:
If more than one instance of the corporate drivers are installed on a PC, you can uninstall all the instances of the corporate drivers, or you can uninstall only a single instance.
To uninstall all instances of the corporate drivers:
Or you can:
To uninstall a single instance of the corporate drivers (must be a USB or 1284 Parallel direct connection):
To uninstall from the command line:
The full, retail software solution includes the Director, OCR, and other applications used with the Officejet, and is included on a CD that ships in the product box.
To use the HP Officejet Director software on the same HP Officejet 7100 Series, you must uninstall the HP Officejet corporate drivers. To reinstall the corporate drivers, you must uninstall the HP Officejet Director software.
The Scan button on the front-panel of the HP Officejet 7100 Series is not supported with the corporate drivers. It is only available when the HP Officejet Director software, which is part of the full retail solution, is installed.
If this software is replacing a previous HP Officejet installation, HP recommends that you uninstall the older software before installing the 7100 Series corporate drivers.
If you experience difficulties uninstalling an older version of HP Officejet software after you have installed the 7100 Series corporate drivers, you should reinstall the corporate drivers to make sure that the installation of the corporate drivers was not affected. In most cases, simply running setup.exe will repair any damaged installations of the corporate drivers.
If you are using a network connection to the Officejet printer under Windows NT and have an existing JetDirect driver installed on the PC, you must first uninstall the existing JetDirect drivers, then physically connect the PC and Officejet, turn on the Officejet device, and re-install the JetDirect software. During the process, the installer will ask for the .inf file for the printer. Direct the path to the HP Officejet 7100 Series CD root directory.
Microsoft Corporation has a defect in their Office 97 Suite where a multi-page scan fails when using the automatic document feeder (ADF). Because of this, you may have to scan a multi-page document one page at a time for Office 97 applications. Similar issues have been found with Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) scanning in Office XP.
If the HP Officejet 7100 Series corporate drivers and Director software are both installed on one computer, they can co-exist without incident. However, uninstalling one of them may cause the other to malfunction.
