=====================================
3. Restrictions
=====================================
-----------------------------
3.1 With Solaris 2.x
-----------------------------
If you are using Solaris 2.x, there are some restrictions:

(1) After you start printing, if the printer is unable to receive data for an extended period of time because it is offline or for some other reason, Solaris will recognise a time-out and will start reprinting. As a result, data may be cut off during printing, or the system may start reprinting from the first page.

(2) If you check the printer's status using "lpstat -p Printer Name", Solaris will be unable to recognise any text string (such as Printer Ready) sent in response as a printer status. Therefore the system will display "Faulted" before displaying the text string.

 (3) Proper operations are not assured if a printing-related command is sent from a given machine to the Ethernet board while that machine is printing through Solaris. This is because the system is designed so that no other packets can be output until Solaris finishes sending the data.

(4) If "lpstat" is entered after the "cancel" command, an "lpstat" error may occur. If this happens, the printer scheduler daemon may not be running. Check this by entering "lpstat -r." If "scheduler is not running" is displayed, the printer scheduler daemon is not running. Use the following command to restart the printer scheduler daemon:

  /bin/sh /etc/init.d/lp start

(5) An error will not occur in Solaris if an attempt is made to cancel a non existent job with the "cancel" command.

-----------------------------
3.2 With Windows NT 4.0
-----------------------------
(1) Windows NT 4.0 LPD cannot be used to spool print data to a UNIX server and use the Ethernet board as a remote printer. If an attempt is made to do this, an error will occur in UNIX and the data will not print properly in some cases.

(2) If "lpr.exe" is entered through the MS-DOS prompt in Windows NT 4.0 while a large amount of data is being printed from another PC, an "lpr.exe" error will occur and printing may be canceled in some cases. If "lpr.exe" terminates in an error, garbage data may be printed or subsequent print jobs may be adversely affected. This type of problem will not occur if the printer port named LPR PORT is used. Use the printer port named LPR PORT with Windows NT 4.0.

(3) AppleTalk Printing Devices in Windows NT 4.0 are PostScript Only. Therefore printing will not work properly with PCL.
